Aston Villa are seemingly closing in on their next signing in the January transfer window, with the Daily Mail reporting that they have entered into advanced talks to land Kerr Smith.

Villa have been one of the early pace-setters in the window. Of course, Philippe Coutinho is already through the door, joining on loan from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano claimed that they have opened talks with Everton over a deal for Lucas Digne. The journalist suggested that the Villans have always been the front-runners.

But perhaps another name could end up beating Digne through the Villa Park door. The Daily Mail reports that Villa are now in advanced talks to sign Smith from Dundee United.

It is noted that no fee has been agreed just yet. But Villa are prepared to spend a hefty sum to win the race to land the 17-year-old.

Another impressive piece of business as Aston Villa close in on Kerr Smith

Smith has been in and around the first-team at Tannadice this season. He has been named in their last 15 match-day squads in the Scottish Premiership, featuring five times.

He has predominantly featured at centre-back. But he also has the ability to provide cover on the right. And obviously, he will be a player that former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be well aware of from his time north of the border.

It would be a coup for Villa to net his signature. Previous reports have seen Smith linked with clubs such as Leicester, Leeds, Southampton and Crystal Palace. That arguably provides a clear indication of how highly he is rated.

And it seems that Villa are well on their way to adding Smith to their increasingly impressive youth ranks.
