Report: Celtic battling Leeds and Brendan Rodgers to sign teenage Scottish wonderkid

The Scottish Sun claim Celtic are battling Leeds United, Leicester City and other clubs to sign Dundee United wonderkid Kerr Smith this summer.

Smith, born in 2004, has already played seven times for United’s senior side. Towards the end of last season, he was handed five Premiership outings.

This season, he has played twice in the League Cup for Dundee United. That has not gone unnoticed, and numerous clubs are interested in Smith.

The report from The Sun states that Southampton are winning the chase to sign Smith. However, the Saints are not alone in pursuit of the defender.

Crystal Palace, Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester and Leeds are also keen – while Celtic want him to stay in Scottish football. His contract expires in 2023.

Leeds, Celtic, Rodgers and more: Which club best for Smith?

A move to any of the clubs interested would see Smith go from playing first-team football – to dropping into their Under-23 sides in the coming weeks.

Southampton are said to have two bids rejected – but a move to the Saints is probably his best move. Their signings show a real faith in youth.

Four of their seven signings are teenagers in Tino Livramento, Armando Broja, Dynel Simeu and Thierry Small. Romain Perraud is only 23.

So, Southampton is his best move. Leeds are also known for a faith in youth and their Under-23 side is strong. Celtic lack options at centre-back.

Stephen Welsh and Dane Murray have been used at centre-back by Ange Postecoglou – and are also keen to hand youth a chance.

Southampton best, Celtic good, Leeds alright for Smith – but Rodgers and Leicester needs to be avoided.
