Report: Aston Villa left little surprised by amount of interest in 23-year-old player this summer

Aston Villa expected more interest in Douglas Luiz than there has actually been so far this summer, according to a report from The Athletic.

Like many Villa players, last season was a mixed bag for Luiz. The 23-year-old was absolutely outstanding in the opening months of the campaign.

However, his form dipped as the year went on. There were certainly times when he was outshone by teammate Marvellous Nakamba in the middle of the park.

But he has still been linked with moves away in recent months.

Manchester City had the option to bring the Brazil international back. Meanwhile, more recently, it was suggested that Jose Mourinho wanted him at Roma.

It was claimed that Luiz was seen as a possible alternative to Granit Xhaka for the Giallorossi.

Villa fans will welcome Luiz going nowhere. But it seems that the Villans hierarchy have been somewhat taken aback by how easy keeping the midfielder has been.

According to The Athletic, Villa expected more interest in the midfielder this summer.

Douglas Luiz should certainly attract major interest in coming years if he rediscovers best form for Aston Villa

Most clubs are not spending big money this summer. So perhaps, Luiz not attracting major attention should not come as a shock.

He did struggle more as the season went on. And Villa would surely want a hefty price.

He certainly has the potential to attract a lot more attention in the future. He showed just how good he could be for much of last season. And he should only get better in the coming years.

If he can rediscover that form, it may not be too long before Dean Smith’s men face the battle to keep him that they perhaps anticipated this summer.
