Report: Aston Villa have 'serious interest' in Burnley's Dwight McNeil
According to a report from The Athletic, Aston Villa are keen on signing Burnley winger, Dwight McNeil, in the summer window.
It is claimed that the Villans hold a ‘serious interest’ in McNeil, who once again played a key role in helping Burnley stay up this term.
McNeil, 21, is one of the brighter prospects in the Premier League at the moment, outside of the top six clubs. His form in the last few seasons has seen his reputation rise, and a number of clubs are said to have cast their eye.
But it is Villa, it seems, who are ready to move. The Athletic claim that Dean Smith is looking to expand his squad this summer. Crucially, it is suggested additions such as McNeil and Emi Buendia, are not to replace Jack Grealish.
McNeil laid on five goals for his teammates this season but scored just the two. However, is a massive talent. Indeed, he has caught the eye previously, when Jamie Redknapp praised him.
“Dwight McNeil, as I say, I really like him. Every time I watch him he gets better and better. He’s got real quality and certainly a player that the top six to eight clubs will be looking at. And that’s no disrespect to Burnley because I don’t like saying that sometimes. But he is that good,” Redknapp said.
Burnley will no doubt demand a hefty sum, should they decide to sell McNeil.
Dwight McNeil a sound addition for Aston Villa
Villa’s owners don’t seem to mess about and it looks like they’re doing to back Smith again this summer. Both McNeil and Buendia would be stunning additions.
The big question is can they keep Grealish? Manchester City are sniffing, by all accounts. And Grealish, if he has a good Euros, might be tempted to test himself higher up the ladder.
But if Villa can land McNeil, it would soften the blow. While the capture of Buendia at the same time would be a huge coup too.
