Report: Aston Villa could loan out Jed Steer
Aston Villa are willing to loan out Jed Steer this summer, with The Sun on Sunday (30/5; page 59) reporting that Dean Smith is keen to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.
The Villans have already seen one stopper leave the club at the start of the window.
Villa confirmed on their official website that Tom Heaton has moved on. Reports suggest that he is destined to return to Manchester United.
Some may have assumed that that would leave Steer acting as Emi Martinez’s understudy heading into next season.
The 28-year-old was on the bench throughout the first-half of this past campaign as Heaton made his way back from injury. He also returned to the backup role on a few occasions in the final weeks of the season.
But it appears that he is actually going to be given the chance to secure a move away.
According to The Sun on Sunday (30/5; page 59), Steer is set to be given the green light to leave for a Championship side on loan.
It is claimed that a new signing may well come in to provide competition for Martinez at Villa Park.
Aston Villa letting Steer out on loan should put several Championship sides on alert
Steer has previously proved that he is a very good goalkeeper while out on loan.
He played 38 times in the second tier with Huddersfield, while he was excellent during his time with Charlton Athletic in the 2018/19 season.
His availability therefore, should put several Championship sides on alert.
But Villa should not shut the door on keeping him either. As a backup, he is arguably a very decent understudy for Martinez.
Of course, there may be better options available on the market. But making a signing when Martinez is the number one may not be easy for the Villans.
So while it may be good news for Steer’s own career should he seal a loan move, perhaps Villa may not mind too much if he ends up replacing Heaton next season.
