Report: Aston Villa are ready to discuss personal terms with 'outstanding' Premier League player next week

Aston Villa are ready to discuss personal terms with Burnley defender James Tarkowski after the end of the Premier League season.

Tarkowski was of course part of the backline which helped the Clarets earn a 1-1 draw at Villa Park last night, meaning top flight survival is in their own hands.

The England international will be a free agent in the summer and he has already told Burnley he will be leaving the club.

The Athletic claim that Steven Gerrard wants a new central defender to add to his ranks next season and the prospect of landing Tarkowski on a free appeals to him.

Villa set to talk personal terms with Tarkowski

Their report reads: “Gerrard has held internal conversations about strengthening the back line for months. Tarkowski is high up on his list of options.

The 29-year-old is out of contract next month and will be available on a free transfer. Villa are ready to start talking terms once the season is wrapped up.

A number of other clubs are ready to compete for his signature while Villa also have other players in mind including Liverpool’s Joe Gomez. If a new centre-half arrives, as expected, then Kortney Hause may be made available for loan.

He signed a new contract earlier this year but has started just one Premier League game under Gerrard, who knows they need another tried and trusted performer to add further competition to the defence and Tarkowski, with his experience and leadership qualities, on a free feels like the perfect candidate.

Tarkowski has been linked with Newcastle and Everton and interest is unsurprising given his contract situation and his Premier League experience.

Former Clarets boss Sean Dyche has labelled the England international as an ‘outstanding‘ player and he knows what he is doing at Premier League level.

For now, Tarkowski’s immediate focus is keeping Burnley safe and he and his teammates know that if they win against Newcastle on Sunday, they will survive.
