Report: Arteta and Edu are both big fans of Argentina star, could be very expensive for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu like Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan as the club search for a new striker.

The Athletic have run through the potential new frontmen the Gunners could sign this summer as Arteta goes in search of some extra firepower.

It was reported last month that Arsenal were trying to pip their north London rivals Tottenham to the signing of the 24-year-old.

That said, it has also been claimed that their lack of Champions League football is a disadvantage, on top of the huge potential transfer fee.

The report reads: “Gabriel Jesus is the main target, but several other names are in the frame.

Tammy Abraham, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Victor Osimhen, Lautaro Martinez and Gianluca Scamacca have all been discussed by Arteta and technical director Edu.

Like Scamacca, Martinez may be a very optimistic target for Arsenal. Arteta and Edu remain fans of the 37-cap, 19-goal Argentina international, but he signed a new deal at Inter last October which would make it a more expensive transfer than 12 months ago.

That’s before factoring in missing out on the Champions League football he’d get next season if he stayed.

Another potential issue with signing Lautaro is that he prefers playing in a front two and Arteta tends to use a lone frontman.

The Inter man looks like he would be out of Arsenal’s price range, and that is especially pertinent without Champions League money to boost their budget.

Jesus has one year left on his Manchester City contract and should be available at a more affordable price, but we are still waiting to see which way Arsenal will truly go in their search for a new striker.
