Arsenal would prefer to sign a new central midfielder instead of Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic in January.

Rumours have sprung up in recent days that the Gunners could go back in for the Serbian international they failed to sign last winter.

But Calcio Mercato claim that those links have no merit and that Mikel Arteta is happy with his current striking options right now.

They say that a greater priority is to sign a new man for the engine room, after failing to sign Douglas Luiz on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal would prefer new midfielder over Vlahovic

That stance is no surprise, given that after Arsenal missed out on Vlahovic, they remained patient and got Gabriel Jesus during the summer.

The Brazilian has taken to life at Arsenal like a duck to water and has helped Arteta’s side rapidly improve this season already.

A new big-money striker signing would make no sense but Arsenal look a little light in the middle of the field, especially given Thomas Partey’s persistent injury problems.

It is not yet clear whether Luiz remains at the top of their wishlist and plenty will depend on how his situation at Aston Villa develops.

Youri Tielemans at Leicester is another who has been linked and the Foxes have made an awful start to the season thus far.

His contract expires at the end of the season, so there are options out there for Arsenal at affordable prices, if they really push for a new midfielder when the winter window opens after the World Cup.
