Report: Arsenal unlikely to land £52m-rated ace this summer
Arsenal are unlikely to be able to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Thiago Tomas this summer, with European football set to deny the Gunners their chance.
Goal has claimed that while Tomas is a player Arsenal like, he is likely to remain in Lisbon next season. That is so he can experience playing in European football, something the Gunners cannot offer.
The youngster is said to have a release-clause of £52m in his contract.
19-year-old Tomas has enjoyed a meteoric rise while in Lisbon. He’s been compared to some of the very best in the game, and looks to have the world at his feet.
However, his immediate future won’t be in North London with Arsenal. The Gunners’ failure to qualify for European competition has hindered their chances of landing Tomas.
Instead, the Gunners seem to be pressing ahead with other targets. Ben White is set to join from Brighton. Other players, such as Albert Lokonga, are also being heavily linked.
Tomas, though, might be one for the future it seems. Whether that is with Arsenal, or other teams make their move, remains to be seen.
Tiago Tomas a class act but likely to end up away from Arsenal
It seems like Arsenal are keen on nearly every player in Europe at the moment. The fact is though, they can’t sign everyone.
Tomas is obviously someone who is on their radar. But given his talent, he’s also likely to be on the radar of everyone else as well.
This is where Arsenal might fall short. Other clubs, like Lisbon are here, can offer the lure of European football. If the Gunners are to get the best talent, then they need to get back in the top four mix and soon.
Tomas will probably enjoy a good campaign with Lisbon next season. If he does, then there’s every chance that Europe’s elite come sniffing.
