Arsenal transfer: Gunners reportedly close to agreement for Brighton defender
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Brighton defender Ben White, according to The Athletic. The Gunners have courted the England centre-back for some time and look to have got their man.
It is being reported that the deal will cost Arsenal an initial £45 million. An extra £5 million will be due to the Seagulls based on performance related add-ons.
Brighton look to have got the £50 million they wanted for White and an agreement is now extremely close.
No other bidders have come forward and as a result, Arsenal will have a free run to agree personal terms with the player.
Mikel Arteta has made no secret of his desire to bolster his defence. David Luiz has left, whilst William Saliba is also unfancied by the Arsenal boss.
Gabriel looked decent last season but the jury has long remained out on long-term Gunners player Rob Holding.
The 23-year-old came of age during a loan spell with Leeds United during the 2019/20 campaign. He helped the Whites win promotion to the Premier League with some scintillating performances.
White was then handed a chance to star at Brighton and grasped the opportunity with both hands. He made 35 appearances for last season, winning praise from Jamie Redknapp.
The Sky Sports pundit told The Argus: “Ben White is going right to the top. The young man is destined for an amazing future and I love him.”
White has two England caps to his name and is currently with the Three Lions squad for their Euro 2020 campaign.
White to Arsenal: Gunners set to land a future star
This looks like a brilliant piece of business by Arteta and it could propel the Gunners into loftier league positions.
White is an intelligent defender who is comfortable on the ball, rarely makes mistakes and boasts an uncompromising physique.
The £51,000-a-week youngster might not be a massive name but he has the attributes to become a major player in future years.
Arsenal have been hapless at the back for years. As a result, the signing of White makes perfect sense and he could quickly become a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium.
