Report: Arsenal target who 'ran the show' on Monday unlikely to sign new contract

Arsenal have received a potential boost in their pursuit of Ruben Neves, with The Sun reporting that the midfielder is unlikely to sign a new contract with Wolves as he considers his long-term future.

It was reported at the weekend that the Gunners are back in the running for the Portuguese. The Sun suggested in the summer that Mikel Arteta’s men had opened talks with Jorge Mendes about a potential deal for the 24-year-old.

Of course, luring Neves away from Molineux is not going to be easy for his admirers. The former Porto man is playing some brilliant football right now.

He was outstanding as Wolves beat Manchester United on Monday. Paul Merson suggested to Sky Sports that he ‘ran the show’ alongside Joao Moutinho.

And Wolves want big money for the midfielder. According to The Sun, Bruno Lage’s men are looking for at least £40 million for Neves.

What may help Arsenal however, is that Neves may leave Wolves in a tricky position before too long. Transfermarkt shows that he has two and a half years left on his contract.

And The Sun suggests that Neves is unlikely to extend his contract. He remains happy at Wolves. But he also has one eye on the next stage of his career.

Obviously, Wolves are under little pressure right now. But demanding more than £40 million may become trickier should his contract run into its final two years.

Arsenal should make Ruben Neves a top priority for this summer

Arsenal still need to strengthen in midfield. It is one area where Arteta is yet to perform major surgery. And many of the players he inherited remain.

They have done well this season. However, they surely need to improve further if they hope to kick on. And Neves – heading into the best years of his career – would surely be an upgrade.

Therefore, Neves should be one of the names near the very top of the Arsenal wishlist heading into the summer.
