Report: Arsenal table offer to sign World Cup winner
Spanish newspaper AS have claimed that Arsenal have tabled an offer to sign Real Betis playmaker Nabil Fekir this summer. The World Cup winner could be allowed to leave the Spanish side despite improved considerably in his second season in Spain – and Arsenal are looking to take advantage.
Fekir, 27, was the talk of the town in the summer of 2018. He was expected to complete a move to the Premier League with Arsenal linked. A move to Liverpool came within inches of completion – but fell through. He remained at Lyon for another season, and then joined Betis in 2019.
However, it has not been a match made in heaven. A struggling first season has seen him improve this time around – but his Lyon form is a distant memory. Arsenal, though, want to change that. Reports emerged Arsenal were keen last week – and now, AS claim an offer has been tabled.
Where does Fekir fit in at Arsenal, after offer is made?
With Martin Odegaard due to return to Real Madrid, Fekir slots in nicely as competition alongside Emile Smith-Rowe. The issue Mikel Arteta now has that with a big squad, he no longer has European football to appease those who are not getting game time in the league. So, is Fekir really necessary?
Or does he stunt the growth of Smith-Rowe – given he is likely to start above him? If he is available, wants to join and is able to be bought at the right price, then of course, he would be a top signing. But Arsenal do not need him, he is more of a luxury than a necessity.
