Report: Arsenal now want to sign Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas
According to Spanish outlet Super Deporte, Arsenal are interested in signing Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas this summer.
Following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure in February and Alexandre Lacazette leaving the club earlier this month, the Gunners are in desperate need of a new number nine, and Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with plenty of big names already.
From the likes of Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus to Napoli’s Victor Osimhem, Arsenal are rumoured to be interested in several elite goalscorers, but the latest player to come out of the rumour mill isn’t really a household name.
That’s De Tomas, who after failing to make a name for himself at Real Madrid, has become a star at Espanyol.

De Tomas came through the ranks at Real Madrid’s youth academy and remained in the club’s books until the summer of 2019. He then moved to Benfica, where he was barely used despite spending a year there.
Then, in 2020, De Tomas secured a transfer to La Liga side Espanyol, and he has been incredible for them. In 89 appearances for the Barcelona-based club, he has scored 45 goals and provided six assists, which is an excellent return for a striker in a mid-table side.
The report claims that several clubs across Europe are interested in De Tomas, including Arteta’s Arsenal, who were also linked with a move to sign the Spaniard in January after a deal for Dusan Vlahovic fell through.
De Tomas still has four full years left in his contract at Espanyol, and his release clause stands at £60 million. However, he is reportedly valued at just £21.5 million, which makes him one of the most affordable players on Arsenal’s wish list.
Outscored Luis Suarez and Alexander Isak last season
Espanyol finished 14th in La Liga last season, just four points above relegated Granada. One of the biggest reasons why they survived was De Tomas’ goals.
The 27-year-old found the net 17 times in the Spanish top-flight last season. That’s more league goals than any Arsenal player last term, and it’s also more than what the likes of Luis Suarez (11), Antoine Griezmann (3) and reported Arsenal target Alexander Isak (10) managed in 2021/22.
If Arsenal really are interested in De Tomas, the negotiations on personal terms really shouldn’t be difficult. The Spaniard is represented by ICM Stellar Sports, the same agency that represents Gunners defenders Kieran Tierney and Rob Holding.
It is unlikely that Arsenal will make a move for De Tomas considering that he’ll turn 28 in a few months’ time. However, football is a funny old game, and if Arteta fails to land his top targets, he could well make a cheeky attempt to sign the striker, who he also reportedly wanted in January.
