Report: Arsenal most likely to sign 'exceptional' title winning midfielder, who Arsene Wenger knows well

Arsenal spent the final days of the summer transfer window trying to sign a central midfielder.

Despite making efforts to bring in Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and Palmeiras’ Danilo, neither player joined the Gunners.

A report from TuttoMercatoWeb suggests Arsenal may now be putting their efforts into a different option.

Mikel Arteta lost Mohamed Elneny to injury just before the summer transfer window shut.

It highlighted the need to add an extra player to the squad, especially with Thomas Partey’s questionable fitness record.

Partey ended up missing just three games, but Arteta still wants an extra add reinforcements.

TuttoMercatoWeb now believe Arsenal want to sign AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer.

The report suggests that Milan are still trying to renew Bennacer’s contract, which runs out in 2024.

However, a number of unnamed Premier League clubs are interested in him, with Arsenal leading the way.

Arsenal want to sign Bennacer

The 25-year-old midfielder will be a familiar name to plenty of Arsenal fans.

He came through the club’s academy when Arsene Wenger was manager, before joining Empoli in 2017.

Bennacar made just a single appearance for Arsenal’s first team, playing in a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup.

Before leaving Arsenal, Wenger was very complimentary about the Algerian international.

“He’s a player who is not spectacular, but a very efficient player,” Wenger said.

“He’s the kind of player who, once you put him in the team, you don’t take him out anymore.

“He can defend very well, he’s a fighter, a left-footed player and very efficient going forward. He’s a real box-to-box player.”

The ‘exceptional’ midfielder has gone from strength to strength since leaving the Emirates.

He helped AC Milan win their first league title since 2011 last year, missing just seven league games.

A report from Alfredo Pedulla suggests that Chelsea are willing to pay £40m to sign Bennacer.

If Arsenal want to sign Bennacer, they may have to spend some serious cash to bring him back to the Emirates.

A keen tackler and impressive passer, Bennacer would act as the perfect competition for Partey’s in Arteta’s midfield.
