Report: Arsenal left very impressed by their 'special' loanee's displays in 2022, Arteta really rates him

Arsenal have been impressed by Reiss Nelson on loan at Feyenoord since the turn of the year now he has found his form.

The Athletic have reported on Nelson’s progress ahead of Feyenoord’s Europa Conference League semi-final second leg against Marseille tonight.

The Dutch outfit have a 3-2 lead from the first leg, and Nelson set up one of the goals to put his side in the box seat to make a European final.

The midfielder has impressed Mike Arteta, with the Gunners boss terming him a ‘special player’ in 2020, and he apparently remains a fan.

Their report read: “After completing his latest loan move to the Dutch club in the summer, he then experienced a similar situation in his early days in Rotterdam with a groin issue picked up in training providing a stuttering start to this season. It was not until December that Nelson began starting games regularly.

It is understood Arsenal have been particularly encouraged with Nelson’s development since Christmas, which is not overly surprising given his increase in minutes and on-pitch influence in recent months.

Loans manager Ben Knapper made the trip to Feyenoord’s De Kuip Stadium to see Nelson assist the Dutch side’s second goal in that win over Marseille last Thursday in the flesh.

This summer will be another crucial one for Nelson, but 2021-22 was about getting him back on track. Arteta rates Nelson, but needed to find better opportunities for him this season. With it now confirmed Arsenal will be back playing European football come the autumn, he may be needed by his parent club rather than going on loan again.”

It was reported in November that Nelson could leave Arsenal in the summer, despite extending his contract last summer.

Arteta has brought through a host of young players at Arsenal and put their dynamism at the heart of his Gunners side.

He needs increased depth to deal with European competition and Nelson can play in a variety of roles in the forward areas.

Nelson may return to Arsenal with a European trophy under his belt but it remains to be seen whether it earns him another shot at getting into Arteta’s side next term.
