Report: Arsenal interested in Porto winger Pepe, but face paying £65m

Arsenal are interested in Porto winger Pepe, with Record in Portugal reporting that the Gunners are battling with Chelsea for the 25-year-old.

January is shaping up to be a huge window for Mikel Arteta’s men. They have defied all expectations and now sit top of the Premier League table.

Understandably, many Gunners fans are still not allowing themselves to think of a title challenge. But there appears to be too good an opportunity for Arsenal to shy away from. And with that, making signings in January appears to be crucial.

Arsenal interested in Pepe

They have been linked with attacking players ahead of the window. Reports from The Athletic have suggested that they are interested in Mykhaylo Mudryk, but face having to pay £88 million for the Ukrainian.

With that, they are looking elsewhere. And according to Record in Portugal, they are admirers of Pepe.

Chelsea are also keen on the Brazilian. But, like Mudryk, he will not be allowed to move on the cheap. Porto want his £65 million release clause triggered before they let him go.

That is potentially a gamble when you consider that Pepe has only scored two goals and contributed four assists in the top-flight.

However, Pepe is only in his second season in Europe. He has also had to deal with being played all over the park this term.

He has actually made more appearances at right-back than anywhere else so far. But he has also featured on both wings further up the line. And he can play in the middle.

Mikel Arteta has shown this season what he can do with versatile players. And of course, Arsenal signed his former teammate Fabio Vieira in the summer.

The Portuguese league has provided some real gems in the last couple of years. Perhaps Arsenal are hoping that Pepe could become the latest.
