Report: Arsenal had real interest in signing £40m PL star in January but they dithered and missed out

Arsenal really wanted to sign Bruno Guimaraes before he moved to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

That’s what the Daily Mail are reporting after the Brazilian midfielder put the Gunners to the sword in Monday night’s 2-0 Magpies victory.

Fabrizio Romano reported during the winter window that Arsenal loved the look of Bruno, but the Mail report that they dithered and missed out.

That worked to Newcastle’s advantage and they look to have a player who can go from strength to strength next season at the heart of their midfield.

Their report reads: “The irony in Bruno Guimaraes slamming the Champions League door in Arsenal’s face on Monday night was inescapable.

The interest in Guimaraes from north London during the January window was entirely genuine, but it is said they were indecisive and slow in trying to close a deal. Newcastle were less hesitant and the rest is history; Guimaraes scoring the second in a 2-0 win at St James’ Park.

There was a similar theme behind Arsenal’s failure to land Emiliano Buendia last summer. The Gunners were given ample opportunity by Norwich to complete a deal for the Argentina international – but dithered, dallied and haggled.

Like Newcastle did with Guimaraes, Aston Villa executed with minimal fuss to leave Arsenal floundering. Moving forward, attracting the level of player Arteta and sporting director Edu want this summer will be compromised by the failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal went into the business end of the season with a thin squad which has felt the impact of injuries and fatigue.

It looks like they will miss out on the Champions League now, barring an unlikely favour from Norwich on Sunday.

European football will require further squad depth and that is something Mikel Arteta and Edu will need to address.

They may well need more speed and decisiveness than they had in their pursuit of Bruno to get their targets over the line.
