Report: Arsenal haven't yet given up on signing £37.6m star
Arsenal have not yet given up hope of signing Bruno Guimaraes ahead of the final days of the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports’ live transfer blog (25/1; 15:44).
Gunners fans will be hoping that the club sign a new midfielder before the deadline passes next Monday. Of course, the name they have been most prominently linked with is Arthur Melo of Juventus.
However, Guimaraes has also been linked with a potential switch. In fact, it was suggested earlier in the month that Arsenal hold a huge interest in the Lyon star.
Fabrizio Romano claimed on Tuesday that Guimaraes is a player Arsenal love. However, he also reported that Lyon value the 24-year-old at £37.6 million (€45 million). And with that, the Gunners’ hopes appeared to have been dashed.
However, they are not yet ready to throw in the towel. Sky Sports reports that Arsenal have not given up hope of signing Guimaraes. They note that his asking price is at least £25.1 million.
Arsenal likely to explore all options for Bruno Guimaraes
It would be a huge statement if the Gunners brought Guimaraes to the Emirates before the end of the month. No player has won more tackles in Ligue 1 this season, with 44 already, according to FB Ref.
Meanwhile, he also leads the way for progressive passes, with 144. That leaves him 17 clear of his nearest rival, Matteo Guendouzi.
Of course, Arsenal fans will likely be wary of getting their hopes up. It is probably ominous that the Gunners have not yet made the big-money bid by this stage.
There had been reports that Lyon would be open to a loan move that includes an obligation to buy. If that is the case, it is arguably a lot easier to imagine Arsenal still being able to get a deal for Guimaraes done.
Certainly, it appears that they plan to explore the various options.
