Report: Arsenal close to letting Lucas Torreira sign for Fiorentina
Arsenal are close to an agreement with Fiorentina over a deal which will see Lucas Torreira move to the Italian side for the rest of the season.
Torreira has been pushing to return to Serie A this summer and looks to be getting his wish, with Football.London reporting the news today.
The combative midfielder looks set to move to Fiorentina but crucially, the Serie A side have agreed to pay all of his wages for the season. That should represent a significant saving for the Gunners over the course of the deal.
German club Eintracht Frankfurt had made their move for Torreira over the weekend, but the midfielder has always wanted to return to Italy.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had informed Torreira he wasn’t part of his plans earlier in the summer. The Gunners paid around £26m for the Uruguayan when Unai Emery was manager.
TBR’s View: Not ideal, but at least it saves wages for Arsenal
The Gunners really need to get better at selling players. The move for Granit Xhaka to Roma fell through before they have him a hefty new deal. And now they’re stuck with Torreira, albeit he’s going away for another 12 months.
You just get the impression Torreira will end up leaving for nothing eventually. And that is no good whatsoever for Arsenal.
For Torreira, it is yet another chance to go and play regular football away from The Emirates. He’ll be eager to impress, of course, and will hope that this can be the year he does enough to earn a permanent deal.
