Arsenal and Newcastle United are amongst the clubs monitoring Kalvin Phillips, with 90min reporting that Leeds United are yet to open fresh contract talks with the midfielder.

Phillips’ absence has made life incredibly difficult for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. The England international has been sidelined for more than two months. And he is not expected back for a little while yet.

Phillips has a connection with the Leeds United fans like no other player in the squad. Nevertheless, it would appear that the Whites may be approaching a precarious situation with the midfielder’s future.

His current deal at Elland Road expires in just over two years.

Reports claimed that West Ham made a £50 million bid for Phillips in the final stages of the January window. Unsurprisingly, Leeds rejected the bid.

His agent spoke of their desire to open contract talks with the Whites. However, 90min claims that fresh discussions over a new deal have not taken place after they failed to reached an agreement last year.

The longer his future is up in the air, the more encouragement his admirers may take. And that list appears to be growing.

90min claims that both Arsenal and Newcastle want Phillips. Meanwhile, Manchester United, Liverpool and the Hammers are also monitoring developments.

Leeds fans will not forgive club for not agreeing new contract with Phillips if he leaves amid Arsenal and Newcastle interest

Phillips is the fulcrum of Bielsa’s side at Leeds. Raphinha may be the star of the show. But there is arguably no player who is more important to the system at Elland Road.

Losing him would be a huge blow. And with that, fans will be baffled that more is not seemingly being done to agree a new contract with Phillips.

Obviously, Leeds cannot present a blank contract to Phillips and ask him to name his price. But he is not a player Bielsa has been able to replace in almost four full seasons.

Jose Mourinho previously lauded his ‘amazing‘ personality after he shone for England at Euro 2020. So it is no surprise that the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle want him.

And the Leeds hierarchy may be asking for trouble should they not do more to ensure that he stays put.
