Report: Ancelotti tells Real they can't sell Asensio to Arsenal in January
Carlo Ancelotti has told the Real Madrid hierarchy that he does not want Marco Asensio sold in January under any circumstances amid fears that Arsenal may be about to bid for him, according to a report from Defensa Central.
Asensio is attracting plenty of attention as he heads into the final six months of his contract at the Bernabeu. The 26-year-old has played 250 games for Real throughout his career. And he has also started two of Spain’s games at the World Cup.
He has actually only started started once for Ancelotti’s men in La Liga this term. Nevertheless, it appears that Los Blancos believe that he will extend his terms at the Bernabeu.
Ancelotti demands Asensio stays amid Arsenal bid concerns
Defensa Central reports that an agreement over an extension is getting closer every single day. But, as things stand, Asensio will be able to discuss terms with foreign clubs in January.
And one of the teams in the running is Arsenal. Calciomercatoweb reported at the weekend that Mikel Arteta is desperate to add the forward to his ranks.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror reported at the weekend that Liverpool are planning to make a big play to sign Asensio. Jurgen Klopp is apparently a big fan of the ‘world-class‘ Spaniard.
Defensa Central is clearly aware of Arsenal’s interest. They claim that Ancelotti has told the Real board that he does not want Asensio sold under any circumstances if an offer comes in from the Gunners in January.
Arsenal’s need to sign a player such as Asensio has potentially increased in the last few days. Of course, Gabriel Jesus will now miss the rest of the World Cup due to injury. And there are doubts over how long he will be sidelined for when the Premier League season resumes.
Asensio is more naturally a wide-forward. But he has the ability to play up front also. And with that, the opportunity to agree a pre-contract deal may appeal to Arteta.
Had they reached an agreement, it may have been easier to discuss terms with Real about a January deal. But it seems that Ancelotti will not allow him to go anywhere next month.
