Report: 'Amazing' Tottenham player has no desire to leave the club, even after claims Conte may sell him
According to Football London, Emerson Royal wants to stay at Spurs and has no plans to leave the club, despite speculation Conte is willing to sell the 23-year-old.
The 23-year-old full back enjoyed a mixed start to his time at Tottenham after joining from Barcelona last summer, being described as ‘amazing’ at times last season, while competing for minutes with Irishman Matt Doherty before he picked up a season ending injury in April.
Royal’s minutes this season could be limited even further by the signing of Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, but the Brazilian is a popular member of the squad, and according to Football London has no desire to play elsewhere this season.
Earlier in the summer, Royal was linked with a move to Juventus. The two clubs have already developed a partnership since Antonio Conte’s arrival, with Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur joining Spurs from the Bianconeri in January.
Is Emerson’s Spurs career coming to an end?
Antonio Conte is incredibly demanding of his full backs, with the position particularly important in his tactical set-up. They must be both defensively solid and able to make an attacking impact in possession.
Emerson Royal recorded only a single goal and assist in 31 appearances for Spurs last season, compared to Matt Doherty’s two goals and four assists.
His output is even more concerning when compared to new signing Djed Spence’s stats, who also scored twice and provided five assists while on loan at Nottingham Forest, and the young defender was signed by the board especially for Conte, given his style of play.
