Report: Tottenham signed one player this summer purely for Conte; he wouldn't have arrived under Mourinho
Tottenham have made six summer signings this window and there could be even more to follow if Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte get their way.
Spurs have landed a host of new talent that includes proven Premier League players Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, and Fraser Forster. Beyond that, the experienced Ivan Perisic has arrived alongside Clement Lenglet from abroad, while Djed Spence has been signed as a long-term prospect for the club.
And according to Football London, it is the signing of Spence which has been done specifically due to the club having Conte in place as manager now. It’s reported by FL that Spence was signed due to the physical attributes he possesses, such as his pace and power for the wing-back role.
Further, it’s suggested that Spurs wouldn’t have signed Spence under their previous managers such as Nuno Santo and Jose Mourinho, with the club specifically targeting Spence due to Conte’s way of playing and coaching. Certainly, it seems the club are hoping the Italian manager can turn Spence into a world beater.
TBR’s View: Spence Will Need To Fully Buy Into Conte’s Tottenham
Chris Wilder was hardly brimming with compliments for Spence when he left and the young full-back hardly showed class when he called out Neil Warnock after winning promotion with Forest.
With that in mind, it suggests something bubbling under the surface with Spence that some managers can’t quite get on with.
Spence, then, will have to simply do as he’s told under Conte or be left behind. He’s at a top club now with a world-class manager, and any mistakes or lapses in discipline or attitude will stand out a mile. It’s a huge year for Spence, who needs to deliver on the faith shown in him by Tottenham.
