Report: £62k-a-week star set to be left on the bench tomorrow, after being heavily linked with Everton move

Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady has been linked with a move to Everton this summer and the Athletic reports that he is set to be left on the bench for the club’s Premier League opener tomorrow

Reports suggested yesterday that Everton are interested in bringing Coady to Goodison Park as Frank Lampard aims to add some experience to his backline.

The £62,000-a-week Wolves man has three years left on his current deal and is a boyhood Liverpool fan but Lampard is apparently trying to convince the player to join their bitter rivals this summer.

And now the 29-year-old centre-back looks set to miss out on a starting spot tomorrow in Wolves’ first game against Leeds at Elland Road.

Coady to be left on bench

The Athletic reports that Coady is likely to be a substitute tomorrow for Wolves as his consistent number of starts for the club could come to an end.

The club captain hasn’t sat on the bench since 2017 but could face a return to being a substitute this weekend amid links to Everton.

Wolves recently added Nathan Collins to Bruno Lage’s squad and a place in the starting line-up at Molineux looks less clear than it ever has for Coady.

The England international has racked up considerable experience in the Premier League and would bring some much-needed calmness to Everton’s backline.

Lampard has already signed James Tarkowski this summer as he looks to bolster his defence.

Reports have also suggested that the Toffees are keen to offload Yerry Mina this summer and there could be a new-look defence at Goodison Park this season.

Coady has been ever-present in Wolves’ backline since making the switch from Huddersfield Town back in 2015 and would bring valuable experience to Lampard’s backline.

Despite having five centre-backs at the club already, it’s a position that Lampard struggled with towards the end of last season as the squad was hit with injuries.

With Coady looking set to miss out on a starting place tomorrow, Everton may look to capitalise and ramp up their attempts to land the centre-back.
