Manchester City’s defenders struggled to cope with Newcastle United’s direct attacking trio on Sunday.

And a report from The Athletic suggests that Callum Wilson constantly chats to Allan Saint-Maximin, telling him where to go and demanding the ball from the winger.

It’s no surprise that the two combined so well with Wilson guiding the dazzling Frenchman through the game, and Saint-Maximin provided his fourth career assist to Wilson for the second goal.

A typically direct run from Saint-Maximin during a Newcastle counter-attack saw John Stones back pedalling and allowing him to advance on goal.

A clever run from Wilson, creating a yard of space away from Ruben Dias, before knocking the ball past him with his first touch, gave him the time to expertly finish with the outside of his right-foot past Ederson.

The two Newcastle players were outnumbered by five Man City defenders, and yet made the move look so easy, and the communication from Wilson in those scenarios must be vital.

It was arguably one of Saint-Maximin’s best performances in a Newcastle shirt on Sunday, with Micah Richards describing him as unplayable.

He gave Kyle Walker nightmares by isolating the defender in one-on-one situations before shifting the ball so quickly away from him that he always had space to make his next move, although his decision-making still needs work.

His partner-in-crime Callum Wilson is one of Newcastle’s most important players and keeping him fit this season is going to be key to their success.

It’s one of the reasons why Newcastle legend Alan Shearer thinks the 30-year-old might be substituted regularly to avoid overloading him, but Newcastle are simply a better team when he’s on the pitch.

Newcastle visit Tranmere in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, but you would expect both players to be rested for the visit to the League Two side, and so an outing against Wolves may be their next opportunity to play together.
