Newcastle United appear to have stepped up their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule, with Calciomercato reporting that he will leave the Allianz Arena in January.

The Magpies have been linked with the 26-year-old ever since the takeover at St James’ Park went through. His contract expires in the summer. And he reportedly wants £190,000-a-week to sign a new deal with the Bavarian giants.

It does appear that Eddie Howe does need better defenders in January. Of course, the side are sat in the bottom three in the Premier League. The Magpies have not yet kept a clean sheet in the top flight this season.

The positive news is that they appear to making progress in their push to bolster their options in that area of the field.

Calciomercato reports that Sule is set to leave Bayern in January, barring any late surprises.

And the club reportedly leading the race to secure his signature is Newcastle, with the Magpies identifying the former Hoffenheim man as their number one target.

In fact, the Italian outlet claim that the Magpies are already holding discussions with his agent.

Newcastle must put themselves in position to be able to attract Sule and others by January

It appears that Sule is open to moving to Tyneside. And it would be a real coup for Newcastle if they could convince him to join.

The onus is now on Howe and his side to make sure that they are in a position to attract players such as Sule in January.

Of course, the German will be aware that Newcastle are not going to be battling for silverware straight away.

But surely, he will want some evidence that they are moving in the right direction.

He is a player heading into the peak years of his career. So he would be forgiven for being reluctant to sign if a relegation battle is on the cards.
