Report: 23-goal striker lined up to replace West Ham target if Moyes sanctions transfer

Blackburn Rovers have lined Blackpool striker Jerry Yates up as a potential replacement for West Ham United transfer target Adam Armstrong, according to The Sun.

David Moyes is currently battling Premier League competition from Southampton and Norwich to sign Armstrong. The forward was prolific in the Championship last season, netting 28 goals in 40 games under Tony Mowbray.

Only Ivan Toney found the back of the net more often, as his 31 goals fired Brentford into the play-offs. The 25-year-old is heading for the top-flight, however, after adding two more on route to victory over Swansea at Wembley.

Blackburn must listen to offers for Armstrong as the West Ham target is a free agent next year. Rovers, though, feel the 24-year-old is worth £25million, with Brighton, Everton and Fulham also interested in the former Newcastle striker.

Newcastle would also be due a whopping 40 per cent of any fee Blackburn receive for Armstrong from the deal that took the Toon product to Ewood Park in 2018. But Rovers would not need to reinvest much in the man being eyed as his replacement.

Blackpool want just £5m to sell promotion hero and PFA Fan’s League One Player of the Year Yates. His 21 goals, 23 in all competitions, fired the Seasiders into the Championship via the play-offs, while offering nine assists.

Yates could now leave Neil Critchley’s side for Blackburn, who the Daily Mail claim would accept £8m for Armstrong. They also suggested Norwich and Southampton are the leading contenders for his signature in the summer transfer window.

TBR’s view: Blackburn give West Ham Armstrong transfer boost

Blackburn have given West Ham a boost in the race to sign Armstrong by lining up a cheap goal threat in Yates as his replacement. Moyes must now decide if he is prepared to sanction a swoop for the Championship marksman as his next centre-forward.

West Ham cannot wait too long before making their move to sign Armstrong, however. Norwich and Southampton are already leading the charge for the prolific forward. And Moyes seems to have missed out on Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka, as well.

Leicester appear to be signing that striker, per talkSPORT, with Brendan Rodgers eying a £30m deal for the Liverpool and West Ham target. Moyes’ hopes of bringing Chelsea outcast Tammy Abraham to east London also seem unlikely to pan out.

All the movement could see West Ham miss out on a striker transfer if Blackburn gem Armstrong also heads elsewhere. So, while the Irons are interested in Roman Yaremchuk, Moyes needs to decide if he will sanction a swoop for Armstrong.
