Report: £100,000-per-week gem causing Arteta and Edu issues as Arsenal plot key transfer task
Bernd Leno is causing Mikel Arteta and Edu issues as they work to resolve the goalkeeper situation at Arsenal, according to Goal.
Leno faces an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium with talks yet to open over extending his contract beyond 2023. Instead, Arsenal are open to selling the German ace and discovering Arteta’s new number one this summer.
Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana is one option the Gunners could explore if Leno does leave north London. While Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale is also under consideration, but Edu and Arteta cannot put any plans in place yet.
Instead, they are holding off deciding if Leno has a future at Arsenal until he returns from Euro 2020. Arteta, Edu and Head of Football Operations Richard Garlick are being forced to wait, as Leno has made helping Germany his focus.
Arsenal ideally want to resolve their goalkeeper situation before pre-season starts next month. Arteta also has no clear backup, along with Leno potentially leaving, as Alex Runarsson has been deemed below the required standard.
Mat Ryan has also returned to Brighton following his half-season spell on loan last season. And while Arsenal would like to bring the Australian back permanently, he is considering his options after receiving other offers.
TBR’s view: Arsenal need to make Leno decision
Arsenal are seemingly leaning towards retaining Leno if the club are waiting for him to return from Euro 2020. But Arteta and Edu need to decide if the German is staying so they can actually plan for the future.
Leno making the Euros his sole focus is already causing Arsenal issues as they cannot really begin targeting his replacement. Instead, they have to wait for him to return to hear if he wants to stay at the Emirates.
But that could see the Gunners miss out on a £7million move for Onana. The Cameroonian also has interest from other Premier League clubs. And Arteta, Edu and Garlick would surely rue seeing him join a rival because £100,000-per-week Leno forced them to hold off on making a final decision.
