TBR Football brings you Ref Off! A weekly Premier League round-up of Mark Clattenburg’s views on referee decisions, with the latest instalment including Casemiro of Manchester United’s judgement and a mistake made in the Newcastle vs Bournemouth fixture.

Another week goes by, and of course, there was more referee drama in the Premier League. Manchester United against Chelsea took the cake this week, with the star-studded fixture producing two red cards and an abundance of VAR drama.

Arsenal and Manchester City also didn’t disappoint, with plenty of dubious calls and fan reaction as Erling Haaland and Gabriel Martinelli got the goals at the Emirates.

So, without further ado, let’s get into things and hear Mark Clattenburg’s thoughts on all the drama that occurred in England’s top flight this weekend.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

Should Robert Sanchez have been sent off for Chelsea?

“Robert Sanchez was rightly sent off for a wild challenge on Bryan Mbeumo. Once Mbeumo gets to the ball first, the contact was always going to happen, and it’s clearly a foul.

“The next decision for the referee is whether the challenge is worthy of a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. The ball is central, and Mbeumo could get to the ball before the covering defender and with the goalkeeper already out of the goal, it becomes an easier decision to judge a red card.”

Was Casemiro correct to receive a red card?

Casemiro makes the referee make a decision when he dives in from behind to win the ball against Andrey Santos. It’s a silly challenge when already on a yellow card, and you can always make a case to issue a second yellow card for this clumsy challenge.”

Sunderland vs Aston Villa

Was Reinildo’s red card harsh? Or justified?

Mark Clattenburg told TBR Football on Reinildo: “Matty Cash has caught Reinildo after he has played the ball, which should have resulted in Cash being cautioned.

“While Reinildo is on the floor, he makes a small kick out into the body of Cash with his studs, which is an act of violent conduct.

“The VAR was correct to recommend a review as the referee, Sam Barrott, did not see the incident. Some will say that the kick out was only light, but there is nothing in the laws of the game about how hard the contact was made; it’s the act of kicking out that is punishable.”

Bournemouth vs Newcastle United

Should Malick Thiaw have received a red card against Bournemouth?

“Malick Thiaw was very lucky not to receive a 2nd yellow card for a foul on Ryan Christie.

“Thiaw was rightly given a yellow card for a deliberate handball, and then, several minutes later, he brought down Christie with a tackle that stopped a promising attack by Bournemouth.

“This was a clear yellow card and should have resulted in Newcastle down to 10 players.”

When asked if referees are hesitant to give two yellow cards in quick succession, Clattenburg added, “No, if they are clear yellow cards, then the referees should be strong and do their jobs correctly. This was not a difficult decision.”

Arsenal vs Manchester City

Was Bernardo Silva a lucky man to remain on the Emirates pitch?

Mark Clattenburg told TBR Football on Bernardo Silva’s potential red card: “Some people are asking why Bernardo Silva did not receive a second yellow card for throwing the ball at Leandro Trossard.

“Silva throws the ball back to Trossard, who has his head low after stretching after the ball had previously hit him in the stomach.

“There was no malice or violence used in the act of throwing the ball, and Silva was merely returning the ball.

“This situation was well managed by the referee, Stuart Attwell, and he spoke with both players before the match continued. I would have been surprised if a yellow card was shown for this offence.”
