Real Madrid could now be about to throw a spanner in the works for Arsenal – with Mikel Arteta’s transfer plans in danger.
The Spanish giants can be a thorn in the side of any club across Europe with their immense pulling power – previously finding a way to lure Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, Kaka from AC Milan and now Kylian Mbappe from PSG, among many more raids on football’s elite sides.
Now, Real Madrid could cause a huge problem for Arsenal…
Real Madrid could hijack Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal
Arsenal have been closing in on a deal to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in recent weeks.
The £50m move is being described as done by several media outlets, with others even explaining that Arteta is already thinking about where to use the Italy international, with initial plans to invert him off the left like Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Now – however – after missing out on Leny Yoro to Manchester United, Real Madrid have decided to make a push for Calafiori, according to Corriere di Bologna.
This development could cause a multitude of problems for Arsenal.

Firstly, Real Madrid’s interest could spark a bidding war, causing that £50m fee to rise higher and higher, potentially requiring Arsenal to spend millions more to salvage their agreement.
Secondly, Real Madrid boast incredible pulling power, as aforesaid, given their prestigious status as 15-time winners of the European Cup, and could simply snatch Calafiori away from Arsenal before a bidding war can even commence.
Furthermore, other clubs are now aware that Arsenal have at least £50m to spend on a defender, so any cheaper alternatives Arteta and Edu pursue could come with a surplus charge attached.
Clearly, this is bad news for the Gunners in several ways.
Alternative for Mikel Arteta and Edu
Real Madrid are quite capable of getting a deal done for Calafiori rapidly, so Arsenal need to be prepared.
One alternative Arsenal could turn to is Crystal Palace No.6 Marc Guehi.
A story from The Sun recently claimed that the Gunners have been left on red alert after hearing the England international may not sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, and could be sold for £50m.

That is the same fee Arsenal are planning to spend on Calafiori, so it wouldn’t surprise us to see Arteta and Edu move for Guehi if Real Madrid do land the Italian.
