‘Real bad one’: Gary Neville slams goalkeeper who Tottenham reportedly could sign to replace Lloris

Unai Simon has been linked with Tottenham as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris in goal – but was criticised by Gary Neville last night.

Spain were 1-0 up and cruising at half-time against Japan, on course to top the group, then Simon struggled playing out from the back just after the interval.

At the end of that Japan move, he palmed Ritsu Doan’s strike into the net, before Japan completed the comeback to top the group.

Neville told ITV‘s Fifa World Cup highlights [01/12, 10:45 pm] that he was not impressed with the 25-year-old, who could undermine Spain’s bid for World Cup glory.

Neville on Simon

He said: “Simon is the one part of their game that looks like a real weak point and I have to say it starts off badly.

“He’s got to save that [first goal]. They’ve got De Gea still at home.

“I know he’s not been brilliant these last few years, but I can’t think he’d let that one in!

“That’s a real bad one.”

Tottenham are interested in signing Simon as they continue to consider who will succeed Hugo Lloris in the future, according to a report from Marca.

However, he is under contract until 2025 and is thought to have no release clause, which could make any deal hard for Spurs.

There have been plenty of names mooted to replace Lloris, and it remains to be seen who the frontrunner proves to be.

If Simon comes back from this and wins the World Cup, his star will be on the rise, but Spain look to be on a collision course with Brazil now.
