Rangers are looking for a new manager after Steven Gerrard left to join Aston Villa – and Jamie Carragher has explained why it was a “no-brainer”.
Gerrard, 41, has been excellent for Rangers over the last three years. Having clocked up 193 games at Rangers, he won the 2020-21 Scottish title.
The England legend has joined Villa, penning a contract until the summer of 2025 at Villa Park. He replaces Dean Smith, who was sacked on Sunday.
He leaves a Rangers side top of the Scottish Premiership, joining a Villa side that are just above the Premier League relegation zone.
Speaking to Sky Sports News (Thursday, 12.05PM), Carragher has explained why it was a “no-brainer” – but not because Villa are a bigger club.

Going from Scotland to Premier League, it is an easy decision. It’s not how big Villa is compared to Rangers, but it is the Premier League to Scotland.
“When a Premier League club as big as Villa comes calling, it is a no-brainer,” Carragher told SSN, when discussing Gerrard’s move to Villa Park.
Carragher on Gerrard joining Villa: Rangers need to act fast
Losing Gerrard is a blow. But it could get even worse if the Gers do not act quickly, and bring in the ideal manager at Ibrox in the coming days.
The Scottish Premiership title is expected to see the first-placed side qualify for the Champions League group stages – around £40million in value.
It is absolutely pivotal, then, that Rangers finish top – after announcing losses of more than £20million earlier this month.
Rangers have got to act fast to keep things going in the right direction. It needs to be a manager that stitches up the open wound of losing Gerrard.
The Guardian say Rangers are considering moves for both Gio van Bronckhorst and Frank Lampard, as Gerrard’s replacement.
