The Guardian say the Rangers board are considering two names to replace Steven Gerrard at Ibrox – in Frank Lampard, and Gio van Bronckhorst.
Rangers waved goodbye to Gerrard on Thursday morning, Villa announcing the appointment of the Liverpool and England legend until June 2025.
It comes after more than three seasons at Rangers, in which he managed 193 games at Rangers. He won last season’s Scottish Premiership title.
That saw Christian Purslow secure a reunion with Gerrard, having worked with the 41-year-old at Liverpool. His first game will be against Brighton.
His replacement is a crucial decision. Winning the Scottish title this season ensures immediate qualification for the Champions League group stages.
The report from the Guardian identifies two names that the board are pursuing – in out-of-work duo van Bronckhorst and Lampard.

Who do Rangers replace Gerrard with – van Bronckhorst or Lampard?
Lampard has done well down south. He did a good job at Derby County, taking the Rams into the Championship play-offs before going to Chelsea.
But the move came about too soon, really. Lampard joined Chelsea in the midst of a transfer ban and brought through some young guns.
However, the signings he did make have only just got going now – struggling initially. Thomas Tuchel has since starred with the same group.
He needs to get his managerial career back on track. But unluckily for 43-year-old Lampard, van Bronckhorst is absolutely ideal for the Gers.
An ex-Rangers player, he already has a league title with Feyenoord. Van Bronckhorst is perfect, but Lampard is also a decent option.
