Rangers fans surprised by midfielder's display on Monday in win at Firhill
Rangers produced a late 1-0 win in their first pre-season friendly of the season against Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle. Steven Gerrard gave a run out to 21 players on Monday night, with the winner eventually coming from Cedric Itten. But Rangers fans applauded Stephen Kelly.
Gerrard fielded a young side with the odd fringe player before making 10 changes at half-time, as Rangers won at Firhill. Only Robby McCrorie lasted the entire 90 minutes. Stephen Kelly was one of the substitutes to come on at half-time and he impressed in the middle of the park for Gerrard’s men.
Kelly spent last season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Ross County, clocking up 29 appearances. While Kelly did not score, he laid on three assists – helping County survive relegation to the Championship. It comes after a very good loan with Ayr in 2019-20, having a hand in 10 goals in 33.
What did Rangers fans think about Kelly?
Cedric Itten got the only goal of the game for Rangers, as he hammered a powerful effort into the back of the net from close range on 83 minutes. Kelly was excellent, but his future at Rangers – certainly over the next 12 months – is a tricky one. He has two years left on his current deal.
Does Kelly get into the team this season on a regular basis? Or does he just get a handful of appearances. Rangers have just signed John Lundstram on a free transfer. While a loan might be needed, Rangers fans were surprised with just how good Kelly was for the Ibrox club.
