‘Quality and confidence’: Alan Shearer raved about 21-year-old last season, amid Newcastle loan links
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher on loan this summer, who’s someone that earned high praise from Magpies legend Alan Shearer last season.
Gallagher, 21, is a talent from Chelsea’s academy that is back at Stamford Bridge after a loan at West Brom last season.
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle have discussed a potential loan deal for the England Under-21 international.
The report claims Steve Bruce previously tried to sign him last summer, but he could get a second bite at the cherry now that another loan may be on the cards.
Crystal Palace are mentioned as suitors, but Newcastle are serious rivals.
Newcastle icon Shearer was complimentary of Chelsea-owned talent Gallagher in the 2020/21 campaign during his time at West Brom.
“The lad’s got quality and confidence going forward… I think the young man is having a positive season at West Brom, but if he can do that week in week out for Chelsea is another matter. It will certainly give Thomas Tuchel a headache over the summer,” Shearer said in April.
Would Conor Gallagher be a good Newcastle signing?
For Newcastle, it looks like on paper their squad still needs a couple of additions. They need a bit more quality to push for the top half of the Premier League table.
Gallagher, who impressed at the Hawthorns last year, looks a strong fit for Newcastle.
He’s an all-action central midfielder with an amazing engine, which would make him a real favourite with the Toon supporters. In addition, he could give them a box-to-box threat from the midfield.
Shearer’s approval will please Newcastle fans, so it would be a great loan if they can negotiate with Chelsea.
