Pundit thinks Cody Gakpo can join a better club than Leeds United

Cody Gakpo was heavily linked with a move to Leeds United in the final few days of the summer transfer window but now, he has been tipped to join a bigger club.

The Dutchman was a wanted man this summer, with as many as seven different clubs interested in signing him. PSV managed to retain his services in the end, despite a strong, public push from Leeds.

Gakpo has arguably been the best player in the Eredivisie since the start of last season.

The 23-year-old scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions in 2021/22, and he has started this campaign brilliantly as well. In just 12 appearances this term, Gakpo has directly been involved in 15 goals, which is a truly sensational return for a wide player.

Leeds were really keen to sign Gakpo in the summer. Andrea Radrizzani even publicly claimed that he was trying to sign the Dutch international on transfer deadline day, but that move didn’t materialise in the end.

However, reports have revealed that the Whites will make another move for Gakpo in January. Jesse Marsch would definitely love to sign him, but Rene van de Kerkhof believes he “can do better” than Leeds.

He told Voetbal International, as quoted by PSV Fans: “No joke, I think he will be the revelation of the World Cup. He can play football so well, he always plays well against the top teams. I can see him excelling at the World Cup and becoming the surprise of the tournament.

Of course, that will allow him to leave PSV during the winter break, but I think he will just finish the season and take PSV to the title. Leeds, Southampton… I have no contempt for these clubs, but Gakpo can do better. I don’t think England is right for him. Spain or Italy is more obvious.”

TBR View:

The summer transfer window was Leeds’ best chance of signing Gakpo. He would’ve been a sensational signing for them, but the Whites’ chances of getting him next year look really slim.

Gakpo, branded as ‘perfect’, will likely be a part of the Dutch national team at the World Cup. All eyes will be on him in Qatar, and if he has a good tournament, multiple clubs across Europe could end up making a move for him in January.

The likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Newcastle have all been linked with a move already, and if any of those clubs revive their interest, it will be extremely difficult for Leeds to lure him in.

It will be interesting to see what will happen with Gakpo in January, especially if he becomes a star at the World Cup.
