Harry Kane is undoubtedly England’s first-choice number nine.
However, a recent ankle injury has left Kane on the sidelines for the Three Lions’ two recent friendlies, and Gareth Southgate has had to field a couple of alternative options.
Indeed, both Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins started against Belgium and Brazil respectively over this past week, and it’s fair to say they had differing fortunes.
Toney scored against Belgium on Tuesday, while Watkins struggled to make much of an impact against Brazil.
Speaking on the Premier League All Access Podcast, Scott Minto has been discussing Watkins’ performance against Brazil, and while he was critical, he did pay the striker at least one compliment, claiming that he’s a much better athlete than Harry Kane.
Interestingly, this comes after recent links with a move to Arsenal for Watkins.

Ollie Watkins is a better athlete than Harry Kane
Minto shared his verdict on the £28m striker.
“I think this is the one where you can experiment. Ollie Watkins didn’t score and he didn’t run the channels the way he wanted to. He was trying to do what he does for Aston Villa, but he has to adapt his game to what’s happening. Harry Kane isn’t the athlete that Watkins is, but he finds a way,” Minto said.
Ollie Watkins is a fantastic alternative
Watkins may not have had his best game against Brazil at the weekend, but make no mistake about it, he’s a fantastic alternative for Kane.
If any other player had scored 16 goals and grabbed 10 assists already in the Premier League, we’d be calling them world class, but, for some reason, Watkins often evades this sort of praise.
Who knows? Perhaps if Watkins was to get a move to join a team like Arsenal he’d get the credit he deserves as he is knocking on the door of being a truly world-class footballer.
