Pundit claims £22m Tottenham player has been less selfish since Ange Postecoglou came in

Garth Crooks has suggested that Ange Postecoglou has made a decision which has turned Heung-min Son into more of a team player after Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

It is easy to forget now how much of a struggle last season was for Heung-min Son. The South Korean scored 10 Premier League goals. However, that tally arguably flattered the forward as he really looked a shadow of his previous self.

But Son has been outstanding this season. He has already surpassed his goals return from last season, with 14 in the top-flight, including one against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 31-year-old, of course, was named as captain ahead of this season with Hugo Lloris being moved out of the side.

It would not have been an easy task with Spurs enduring such a disappointing year last season, and then losing their best player in Harry Kane.

But writing for BBC Sport, Garth Crooks thinks that giving Son the armband has brought the very best out of the £22 million forward this season.

“One goal and two assists says it all. From the moment the game started there was only one winner. Son’s one-touch finish against Aston Villa demonstrated the versatility of the striker. He’s not just about scoring on the break or creating his own goals, he can be a fox in the box too. I also get the feeling that his appointment as team captain has made the South Korea international more of a team player,” he said.

Spurs have firepower to take on anyone

The Tottenham forward line looks considerably different this season. Dejan Kulusevski has remained a regular in the side. But Richarlison has enjoyed a much better year since Kane moved on.

There have been a number of changes, with the likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner arriving. And yet, Son has helped bring the attacking unit together. And Tottenham now have the confidence that they can outscore anyone.

Spurs’ clean sheet on Sunday was their first against a top-half side since August. And that just shows how devastating their attacking players can be – with Son as their leader.
