Janusz Michallik has suggested that Manchester United may ultimately have to consider bids for Bruno Fernandes as the club look to overhaul the squad, despite his quality.

Bruno Fernandes has arguably been Manchester United’s best player over the last four years. Certainly, he has proved to be very good value for money after signing from Sporting for £47 million.

The Portuguese has scored 71 goals and contributed 61 assists in 219 games for United. He has also captained the side on a number of occasions.

Manchester United may have to consider offers for Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes has come in for criticism during his time at Old Trafford. But you cannot question what he can do on the ball. Rasmus Hojlund claimed Fernandes is the best player he has probably ever played with.

But of course, Manchester United are not in the best position right now. Erik ten Hag is facing criticism and is fighting to prove that he is the right man to take the club forward. And it does appear that a lot of the squad needs to be cleared out.

Fernandes is arguably not one of the biggest issues. However, speaking on ESPN, Janusz Michallik has suggested that selling the 29-year-old may have to become an option given how many changes are required.

“I don’t like his body language, but I still respect him as a player. I still think that if you take everything into account in a properly-functioning team, he is a creator, he is a difference-maker,” he said.

“He is an important part of that team. I don’t know if he’s a captain. I doubt it. I also don’t know if you may have to sacrifice him. Because the reality that we didn’t mention in that clean slate is that sometimes you have to sell players like him in order to get some money. And there’ll be people that will pay big money for Bruno Fernandes.”

Captain’s future could be uncertain

There are plenty of players within the ranks who are not going to attract big fees. But many of those are the ones who surely need to be moved on as soon as possible.

So you can understand why Fernandes is on Michallik’s list to potentially leave also. There are players United need to build their next team around, including Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Fernandes is perhaps somewhere in between. If he stays, that could be fantastic for United.

But if a big offer comes in, United would be wise to consider it.
