Chris Sutton has criticised Bruno Fernandes after hearing what the Manchester United skipper said following Sunday’s win at Newport County.
Man United booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 victory in South Wales. Erik ten Hag’s men looked set to cruise to a comfortable victory after goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put them 2-0 up inside 15 minutes.
Yet, the Red Devils made hard work of it in the end as Newport grabbed two goals against the run of play to set up a nervy finish.
Goals from Antony and Rasmus Hojlund sealed an important win for Ten Hag but Fernandes’ comments after the game caused some concern.
The United skipper suggested that his teammates were too selfish in the final third after taking a 2-0 lead.

“The first one, it’s a great goal from them,” the 29-year-old told the BBC. “Unbelievable shot. But after we have to be more focused. In the second half, we can’t concede another goal and let them have some belief.
“We have to kill the game. In the first half, we had chances to make it 3-0, but because when you get 2-0 in these kinds of games, everyone wants to try to score and get their goal, sometimes we don’t make the best decision for the team. After we did a great job to close the game.”
And Chris Sutton has questioned Fernandes’ decision to publicly call out his teammates after Sunday’s win.
Sutton stunned by Fernandes’ comments after FA Cup win
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton admitted he was surprised to hear Fernandes’ comments on Sunday.
“Did you see Bruno Fernandes’s comments at the weekend? When he talked after the game and said we had chances to make it 3-0 but everyone wanted to score and get their goals and sometimes we don’t get the best decision for the team,” Sutton told The Monday Night Club.
“Does that not tell you a lot about the Man United dressing room, the captain coming out and basically saying there are selfish players in the team. Why do that? Why not keep that in house?
“Maybe he has and it’s a last resort but that tells you where Manchester United are as a team.”

Fernandes’ comments weren’t far from the truth as United were wasteful in the final third after taking an early lead.
Players are often criticised for keeping their cards close to their chest during post-match interviews and in our view, it was refreshing to hear Fernandes speak openly about his thoughts on the game.
The United skipper didn’t exactly cross the line with his post-match comments and it’s his job to set the standards at Old Trafford.
