Charlie Sayers has confirmed his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Southend United with a post on Instagram, having spent the past couple of weeks on trial at Spurs.
The 17-year-old defender caught the attention of Tottenham after breaking into Southend’s first team – who are currently playing in the National League. He has clocked up six outings this term.
Spurs chose to bring him to the club, initially on trial – according to the Southend Echo. He played, and captained, Tottenham’s Under-18 side in a recent 3-0 league loss to Crystal Palace this month.
Despite the defeat, Spurs have chosen to bring Sayers to the club on a permanent deal. Southend confirmed the deal initially on their website, stating that Sayers will move as a second-year Under-18 player.
The chances are, that while he will be a regular for the Under-18 side – he will certainly break into the reserves at some point. Sayers posted on Instagram after the move was confirmed by his previous club.
Tottenham transfer news: Why 23’s side needed to sign Sayers
What jumps off the page regarding Sayers, is that he is incredibly versatile – or that he is simply yet to hold down a position. He can play at centre-back, left-back, or even on the left of the midfield.
The 23’s lack a left-back. Kallum Cesay has played on the left of the defence at times this season, though he is naturally a right-back. That lack of left-back might see Sayers promoted sooner, rather than later.
