Report: Tottenham set to sign English club's teen, after six senior 21-22 outings

The Southend Echo claim Tottenham are set to complete a move to sign Southend United teenager Charlie Sayers – with the left-back having spent a fortnight on trial at Spurs.

Sayers, 17, has broken into Southend’s side this season – despite featuring for Tottenham’s Under-18 side last season. He even captained Spurs’ Under-18’s during a 3-0 defeat to Palace earlier this month.

This season, Sayers has been on trial at Tottenham for the last two weeks. His versatility is noticeable, naturally being a left-sided centre-back but more than able to play at left-back – and left wing.

Tottenham have been impressed with his performances for the Under-18 side and Southend’s first team. It is claimed that Spurs are in talks to sign him permanently, and are set to complete a deal.

Sayers to Tottenham: Solid signing for Spurs, likely to be in U23’s

While it is an exciting move for both player, and club, Sayers already has first-team game time under his belt. Tottenham have got to get him into the Under-23 side as soon as possible.

That, or allow him to remain at Southend on loan until the end of the season, as long as there are assurances he is given regular game time by the National League side. He has a contract until June 2023.

Kallum Cesay is currently being used at left-back for the 23’s, but he is right-footed. Jeremy Kyezu is a left-back, but he is yet to make his debut for the reserves.
