Tottenham Hotspur may have received a potential boost should they decide to target Kalvin Phillips, with Newcastle United deciding to call off their pursuit of the midfielder.
It may be a surprise to some that Kalvin Phillips remains at Manchester City. Of course, the midfielder has really struggled for game-time since moving to the Etihad Stadium.
In fact, reports at one stage claimed that Newcastle were hopeful of agreeing a deal for Phillips before the January window even opened.
Newcastle back away from race to sign Tottenham target Kalvin Phillips
However, The Telegraph reports that the Magpies are ready to put their bid to sign the 28-year-old on hold for the time-being.

Manchester City want £7 million as a loan fee for the England international. Newcastle meanwhile, have no interest in paying that much, particularly if any deal comes with an obligation to buy.
That may perhaps open the door for Tottenham if they want to sign the former Leeds United star. Spurs are interested in Phillips, with senior figures at the club particularly keen to bring him in.
It must be noted that Football London has reported this week that Tottenham are not planning to make a move for Phillips this month. So perhaps, the midfielder has now seen two potential exit routes closed off.
Manchester City may have to consider dropping asking price
Tottenham may have wanted to strengthen in the middle of the park this month. They have lost both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr to international duty. The pair were exceptional over the first-half of the season.
However, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was quietly outstanding against Manchester United. And Ange Postecoglou’s side have received the big boost of Rodrigo Bentancur returning from injury.
They have already signed Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner. So they do not need to panic when it comes to bringing in new signings.
If Manchester City are open to dropping their asking price, he could be a really good signing for Tottenham. But clearly, much may depend on what Spurs still have to spend in this window.
