'Potent' £10m player deemed 'perfect' for Tottenham, he could be Conte's very own Cafu - TBR View

Tottenham Hotspur seem likely to delve into the transfer market for a new right wing-back this summer.

Emerson Royal has struggled at times in his maiden season at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty has been solid enough but Antonio Conte may well want to upgrade.

Tottenham failed to get the signing of a new right wing-back over the line in January.

Although Dejan Kulusevski can play there, he’s become indispensable on the right side of attack.

The likes of Djed Spence and Isaiah Jones have been linked with Spurs in recent months.

But earlier this month, Get French Football News provided a new RWB suggestion for the north Londoners.

The outlet claimed Lens ace Jonathan Clauss would be “perfect” for Tottenham.

‘No ordinary right-back’

The 29-year-old joined the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer in 2020 and has been one of their standout players.

Clauss has made 73 appearances for Lens, including 39 this season.

He has registered an impressive 11 assists from 36 league games, plus five goals.

As per GFFN, Clauss also ranks among the league’s best in crosses, key passes, and interceptions.

“As well as defensively astute, Clauss is arguably Lens’ most potent and important creative force,” they wrote.

“Such is the threat posed by his whipped deliveries from all areas, both in open play and from set-pieces.

“Much of Lens’ attacking play, especially after Gael Kakuta’s recent downturn, is channelled through Clauss down Lens’ right flank as part of a 3-4-1-2 set-up similar to Conte’s.”

Meanwhile, the Ligue 1 website deemed Clauss ‘one to watch’ earlier this year.

“His Twitter handle, @Djoninho25, gives you an idea that he is no ordinary right-back,” they wrote.

“If you’re thinking defender, he’s in the mould of Brazil legend Cafu, offering his team a lot going forward while not neglecting his ‘day job’ at the back.”

Clauss has been so impressive this season that he made his France debut in March, earning two caps.

He appears to have a decent chance of making Les Bleus’ 2022 World Cup squad this autumn.

And GFFN reckons Clauss could prove a bargain, speculating on a potential price tag ‘(much) less than £10m’.
