‘Please sign’: Some Liverpool fans want PL rivals to sign their 26-year-old
Liverpool forward Divock Origi is someone who’s on the fringes of the squad at Anfield – and that’s why some of the club’s fans on Twitter have urged Premier League rivals Southampton to try sign him.
Origi, 26, is a Belgian striker that’s been on the books at Anfield since 2014. His time with the Reds has included loan spells at Lille and Wolfsburg.
He’s racked up 157 first-team appearances for the Merseyside giants, but he’s now entering the final year of his contract with them.
The centre-forward has provided some memorable moments in a Liverpool shirt, including a famous winning goal in the historic 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals back in 2019.
However, he’s only been a squad player under Reds manager Jurgen Klopp in the last few years. For instance, he made just 17 appearances last season in all competitions.
There are now other options in the group that Klopp could turn to ahead of him to play a central role. Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino and even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fit into that description.
Southampton need a striker
A selection of Liverpool supporters on social media believe Divock Origi is someone that would be great for rivals Southampton.
The Reds have snapped up a host of quality players from St Mary’s over the years, so perhaps the Reds should reach out about Origi’s future to return the favour.
Southampton are in need of a new frontman after Danny Ings left them on Wednesday to join Aston Villa, something which came as a surprise to many.
The Saints banked £25million from Ings’ exit, but right now it’s unclear on how they’ll look to spend that. His exit does leave a massive hole though that needs filling quickly.
If you are a striker starved of minutes right now, surely you would see Southampton as an attractive option given they are a Premier League team with an open spot in their forward line.
Origi exit is already linked
Southampton have not been linked to Origi, but he’s someone that is reportedly receiving attention from elsewhere.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool are “desperate” to sell the attacker this summer. The report says that Wolverhampton Wanderers and Napoli are among the suitors for him.
It remains to be seen where he’ll be playing next year, but The Athletic previously claimed a £20million fee could be enough for the Reds to grant his exit.
With one year remaining on his deal, perhaps Klopp should advise his club to lower the asking price.
Origi came off the bench on Thursday to play 30 minutes during a pre-season friendly with Bologna and had a header cleared off the line.
However, it seems unimaginable that he’s going to get regular game time if he sticks around on Merseyside in the new season.
He’s certainly not a bad player because he makes smart movement around the box, plus he can turn up in big moments.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him do really well at a different English club with regular minutes on the pitch.
