'Player to watch': Matt Doherty thinks 22-year-old Arsenal reportedly want could tear up the World Cup today

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty has tipped Arsenal target Jonathan David as a player to watch at the World Cup.

Arsenal made contact with David in the summer transfer window, but went for Gabriel Jesus and elected to keep Eddie Nketiah as backup.

More recently, Newcastle and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have been linked with the Canadian 22-year-old as well ahead of the January window.

Speaking to Spurs’ official website, Doherty did his daily World Cup diary and was asked who the player to watch for today (Wednesday) was.

Doherty on David

He replied: “I’d go for Jonathan David of Canada.

“He plays for Lille and has scored a lot of goals in the last few seasons.

“It will be interesting to see how he gets on against the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, quality defenders, so he’s my player to watch.”

Yesterday, Doherty tipped Ousmane Dembele to shine in France’s opening game and he picked up an assist in their 4-1 win over Australia.

David has a tough task ahead, up against a Belgium side who have gone deep into recent tournaments but not got all the way yet.

But if he can nab a goal and help Canada cause an upset, he would announce himself on the world stage and take his star to another level.
