Pitt-Brooke says Everton could yet target Tottenham star
Jack Pitt-Brooke has told The View from the Lane podcast that Tottenham Hotspur had been hoping that Newcastle United would want Dele Alli this month, while he has heard that Everton could yet make a move before the deadline.
Dele looks to be one of the players Spurs could move on this month. The 25-year-old had appeared to be one member of the squad who needed the change of manager at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this season.
Unfortunately, he is seemingly yet to win over Antonio Conte. And it was reported back in December that Daniel Levy is now open to letting the England international leave in this window.
Of course, the problem Tottenham face is finding a new home for Dele. The Daily Mail recently suggested that the club were still awaiting concrete offers for the midfielder.
And Pitt-Brooke has hinted that Spurs may have to brace themselves for Dele staying. He suggested that he may already be running out of potential options.
“Spurs had been hoping for a while that Newcastle would want Dele this month, but I gather that’s not the case,” he told The View from the Lane podcast.
“It’s been suggested to me that maybe Everton are considering coming in for Dele towards the end of the month, but as far as I’m aware there’s been no movement on that.”
Everton signing Dele Alli on loan from Tottenham may prove a gamble worth taking for Rafa Benitez
You can unfortunately see why teams are reluctant to pursue Dele this month. He is on £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac. And he has scored one league goal since the start of last season.
Having said that, Everton are not in the strongest position. They sit 15th in the Premier League. And they are eight points clear of the bottom three. With Newcastle proving to be busy this month, the sides above the drop-zone will be looking over their shoulder.
So Rafa Benítez may well feel that there is a need to sign a player with Dele’s ability as the window goes on. Everton have not been big spenders since the Spaniard’s arrival. But a loan may be possible.
Tottenham would surely appreciate a deal. It may provide Dele with the chance to put himself in the shop window ahead of the summer – just as Jesse Lingard did at West Ham 12 months ago.
It would be a gamble for Everton. But they will be wary of letting the deadline pass without bringing further reinforcements in.
