Sergio Diaz of Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño made sure he caught the eye of an Arsenal scout who was in attendance at a recent game at the Estadio General Pablo Rojas.

Cronica reported earlier this week that Gunners scout Everton Gushiken watched a game between Cerro Porteño and Club Libertad and he had his eyes on two players in particular – Alexis Duarte and Julio Enciso.

Duarte managed to keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 win and fared well. Enciso, on the other hand, couldn’t do much as his side were completely dominated from start to finish.

Neither player did enough to blow Gushiken away but Duarte’s teammate Diaz may just have done what it takes to make the Arsenal scout remember him – through his actions on and off the pitch.

We don’t know if any member of either team were aware that Arsenal scout Gushiken would be in attendance, but Diaz’s actions before the game tell us he may have had a hunch.

Just a few hours before the game, Diaz posted an Instagram Story where he’s seen wearing an Arsenal shirt. The overlay text in his post read, “A kid’s dream,” hinting that the Gunners were the team he supported while growing up.

If Diaz’s intention behind his post was to get the Arsenal scout’s attention, he certainly did that with his performance on the pitch. The 24-year-old started up top for Cerro and scored an impressive goal in the 45th minute to double his side’s lead.

Nobody knows what Gushiken thought about Diaz’s display but the striker couldn’t have done much more than he did against Libertad over the weekend.

TBR View:

Arsenal have a good network of scouts in South America thanks to their technical director Edu Gaspar.

It’s very likely that the Brazilian sent Gushiken to watch the game in Paraguay over the weekend but it would be a massive shock if the Gunners decided to sign Diaz this summer.

It’s not that the Paraguayan striker is a bad player, but when it comes to relatively unknown players, Arsenal tend to sign teenagers with the potential to make it big. Gabriel Martinelli is a perfect example of that.

Diaz, sadly, doesn’t quite fit that category as he’s 24 already and is yet to play a game in a top league.
