'He wanted me to come': Wenger once tried to sign 'unbeatable' striker for Arsenal, now he'll cost £100m

Arsenal are in desperate need of at least one new striker and Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates over the last few weeks.

The Gunners let Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leave in February and failed to replace him. Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both set to depart at the end of their contracts this summer, which leaves Arsenal without a reliable striker up top.

Mikel Arteta will ideally need two new strikers this summer and one of them has to be someone prolific. Napoli star Osimhen, who has scored 16 goals in 26 appearances this season, would be a sensational option.

Arsenal will now have to pay a fortune for the 23-year-old but if his comments from a couple of years ago are to be believed, Wenger could’ve signed him for next to nothing back in 2015.

Victor Osimhen: Arsene Wenger told me to come to Arsenal

Osimhen, branded as ‘unbeatable’ by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, first rose to fame when he helped Nigeria win the under-17 World Cup in 2015. He was the top scorer in that competition and that apparently caught Wenger’s eye.

Speaking to the Independent in April 2020, Osimhen said: “I spoke with Arsene Wenger after the tournament ended and he wanted me to come to Arsenal.

“I had a lot of options. Barcelona; Inter Milan; Atletico Madrid; Juventus and the rest.

“Arsenal was a good option but it wasn’t the best at the time. I wanted to start playing as soon as I turned 18. I wanted to go to a place where I had time to invest in my game and improve physically. Wolfsburg showed me that possibility.”

The Nigerian will cost £100m now

A number of clubs across Europe are keen to sign Osimhen this summer and Arsenal are reportedly one of them. However, the Gunners will have to smash their transfer record to get him.

Napoli are in a really strong position now as Osimhen has over three years left on his contract.

That’s probably why the Italian outfit have raised their demands to a staggering £100 million (Football Italia), which makes it difficult for most clubs in the world to sign him.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming months. Arsenal could definitely do with a striker like him, but whether they are prepared to splash £100 million on a single player is a completely different story.
