The front runner for the Liverpool job remains to be Xabi Alonso – with the Spaniard starring over at Bayer Leverkusen, but another manager known to Germany football fans is ranking high on the list.
Alonso has starred in his role at Leverkusen, with the German giants sitting 10 points above Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich. A former Anfield star, it makes sense that he is being linked with a return to Liverpool.
But, he is not the only manager to be linked with the Anfield job – even though Fabrizio Romano says The Reds will do everything they can to hire Alonso. Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi has also been linked.
As has Lens gaffer Franck Haise – while Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann is emerging into the picture. He has spoken about his future already, as he prepares to take Germany into this summer’s Euro 2024.

Julian Nagelsmann is now high on Liverpool’s manager shortlist
Nagelsmann – lauded as “phenomenal” by journalist Ben Jacobs – has starred early on his in his career. Impressing at Hoffenheim, picking up 56 wins in 94 at Leipzig, before shining as manager of Bayern.
Doing the double in 2022, Nagelsmann won 60 of 84 matches as Bayern manager. That kind of form saw him win the Germany job, with a rebuild required after a woeful 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar.
He’s made a difficult start to life as Germany manager – winning only one of four matches, losing to both Turkey and Austria in the November international break. That’s not deterring Liverpool as per reports.
A report from 90Min now claims that Liverpool have a seven-man list to replace Jurgen Klopp – with Alonso and Nagelsmann on it. It is reported that Germany boss Nagelsmann is ranking high on that list.

What Jurgen Klopp has said about Julian Nagelsmann before
Speaking to Sky Sports in 2017 when Nagelsmann was at Hoffenheim, Klopp said: “[He is a] big, big, big coaching talent. I like good football and obviously his team is playing interesting and good football.”
Nagelsmann would suit Liverpool, if Michael Edwards wants Liverpool to continue Klopp’s work – instead of starting a new era at Anfield. Modern, efficient, attacking football from the same German model.
Indeed, Nagelsmann has followed Klopp somewhat in managing Dortmund. There is a world where The Reds hire Nagelsmann and Klopp leaves Liverpool to replace the Germany manager, after Euro 2024.
Nagelsmann would be a very good hire. A manager that is young, exciting and can take Liverpool to the new era, under a new blueprint. But, is he as suited as Alonso? He should be considered second choice.
